How to get your HOA's fence guidelines
- 1Find your association's name
Check your closing documents, a past HOA statement or your annual dues notice. If your neighborhood has several sections, find the section name too.
- 2Look for a document library
Most association websites have a Documents or Architectural page. Search it for fence, modification, design guidelines or declaration.
- 3Ask the management company
If the website has nothing, email or call the manager and ask for the current fence or architectural guidelines and the modification application.
- 4Check the recorded declaration
The recorded deed restrictions for your section are on file with the county clerk. They set the base rules, and the guidelines add detail.
- 5Apply before you buy materials
Submit the request with the fence line, height, material, finish and gate locations. Wait for the written decision.
- 6Book your fence
When you have approval, book your free estimate and tell us the conditions so the fence is built to what was approved.
What Texas law says about security and perimeter fences
Texas Property Code Section 202.023 limits how a property owners' association can restrict security measures. In summary, an association generally cannot adopt or enforce a restrictive covenant that prevents an owner from installing security measures such as security cameras, motion detectors and perimeter fences. The same section lets an association regulate the type of fencing, prohibit fencing that obstructs a license area, a public or community sidewalk or a drainage easement, and require a driveway gate to be set back from the road. It also lets an association prohibit fencing in front of the front-most building line when the covenants provide for it, with exceptions. Fences built before September 1, 2025 are protected from that front-yard prohibition.
This is a plain-language summary of the statute as it appeared in a public reproduction (current as of January 2026), not legal advice, and statutes change. Read the statute and talk to a Texas attorney before you rely on it in a dispute. Chapter 209 covers notice and hearing rights for owners: Chapter 209.
